Pippi Longstocking and her friends take over Kalmar Castle!
The exhibition displayed illustrations made by Ingrid Vang Nyman, who made herself known for her drawings of Pippi Longstocking, The Children of the Noisy Village, and Kajsa Kavat.
Pippi Longstocking has been described as a revolution in the children´s chamber. Ingrid Vang Nyman´s phenomenal interpretation contributed to this perception. Her pictures turned the prevailing order on its head. With her work on Pippi, she influenced and renewed Swedish illustrational art. Three generations of Swedes have grown up with Ingrid’s images of Pippi. Despite this, the artist herself is not well known.
In the exhibition, an exciting career is presented, where the visitor will be able to view her original illustrations. However, there is also room for new discoveries. One example is the story about Jugga Jagga and Vagge Vugge, about the friendship of a jaguar and a walrus who escape from the zoo together. The book was published in 1946 and the publishing house Bonnier awarded it with an honorable mention.
During the 1940s Vang Nyman was – like Astrid Lindgren herself – very productive -and she illustrated most of the books that Astrid Lindgren published during those years. Apart from several titles about Pippi Longstocking, she worked a lot with the books about the Children of the Noisy Village, as well as with the fairy tale collection Kajsa Kavat and Other Children. Both the author Astrid Lindgren and the illustrator Ingrid Vang Nyman were practically unknown to the public when the book about Pippi Longstocking was released in November 1945. Together, they wrote children´s literature history.
The children will also be able to enjoy the exhibition. There are books to flip through and read and they can go for a hunt for answers to different questions among the pictures.
Part of the exhibition has been published before, on Millesgården in Stockholm and on Astrid Lindgren´s Näs. In Kalmar Castle, among the things that will be shown are twenty-four drawings, in original, that the castle are borrowing from Saltkråkan AB and the publisher Bonnier.
