Kalmar Castle has played an important role as both a defensive fortress and a palace. Today, it sits majestically on its own islet with a magnificent view of the Strait of Kalmar. But during the time of the Vasa Kings in the 16th century, it was even more magnificent. Pavilions, gardens, a bathhouse and animal enclosures existed for the comfort and pleasure of the royal family.

During this guided tour, which takes you around the castle’s ramparts, you will learn more about the building as both a fortress and a palace. What is hidden behind the thick walls of the towers? What kind of gardens were there? Why didn’t John III want to reside in the same apartment as his brother Erik XIV? And why is “1886” written at the top of the towers when the castle was built in the Middle Ages?

Dogs welcome!

We are so happy to finally be able to offer an outdoor guided tour that dog owners can also participate in. Since dogs are not allowed indoors at the castle, many visitors have requested a guided tour that is given outdoors. In this new guide, your dog can accompany the group throughout the guided tour. Welcome!
